The short version
- Your microphone audio never leaves your device. Pitch detection runs entirely in your browser.
- We don't have accounts, and we never ask for your name or email.
- Your settings stay in your browser. Practice results and recordings are deleted when you close the page.
- We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are used. In the EU, UK and Switzerland it only sets cookies if you allow it.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or share data for advertising.
Your microphone
When you press Start listening, your browser asks for permission to use the microphone. The sound is analyzed on your device to work out which note you're playing. It is not recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
If you press Record, a short clip (up to 8 seconds) is kept in your browser's memory so you can play it back. It is never uploaded, and it's deleted when you record again or close the page. You can turn the microphone off at any time with Stop listening, or block it in your browser's site settings.
What's saved in your browser
To remember your preferences between visits, the site saves a few small values in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are never sent to us.
- Your color theme (light or dark)
- Your harmonica key, selected bend, and whether advanced bends are shown
- Your cookie choice, so we don't ask again
"Today's practice" scores are kept only in memory and reset when you close the page. You can clear everything above at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used, for example how many people visit, which pages they view, roughly where they're from (country or city, worked out from their IP address), what device and browser they use, which site sent them here, and which outside links they click, such as our Ko-fi page. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses. We use this only to improve the site.
Google Analytics sets these cookies when allowed:
_ga: tells visits from different browsers apart. Expires after 2 years._ga_1V1MS5JSF1: keeps track of the current visit. Expires after 2 years.
Your choice: if you're in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, these cookies are off until you click Allow analytics. Everywhere else they're on by default. Anyone can change their choice at any time with the link at the bottom of every page. Choosing No thanks deletes the cookies. When analytics cookies are off, Google may still receive basic, cookieless signals (such as that a page was viewed) that can't be used to recognize you. We never use Google's advertising features.
Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. You can also install Google's opt-out browser add-on.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which delivers pages and protects the site from abuse. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request details to do this. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. Our fonts are served from this site too, so loading a page doesn't contact any font service.
Links to other sites
The FAQ links to videos and articles on other sites, such as YouTube, and the footer links to our Ko-fi page. Once you follow a link, that site's own privacy policy applies. If you support us on Ko-fi, the payment is handled by Ko-fi and its payment providers; we never see your card details.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR or California privacy law), you may have the right to know what personal data is held about you, and to have it deleted or to object to its use. Because we don't run accounts or keep a database, we don't hold personal data about you directly. For analytics, the simplest way to exercise your choice is Cookie settings above. For anything else, contact us below. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
The site is a general-audience music tool. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes and contact
If we change how data is handled, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Questions? Reach us through our Ko-fi page.
